Translation

Vixen

(sore!1 sore! sore! sore sore sore sore!)
(sore! sore! sore! sore sore sore sore!)

Miss fox is all dolled up
(chikichiki wasshoi! chikichiki wasshoi!2)
Her pigtails are flying
(hirahira wasshoi! hirahira wasshoi!)
She suddenly disappears
(kurukuru wasshoi! kurukuru wasshoi!)

Now, the seven transformations!3

kon kon kon kokon kon kon kokon4

(sore! sore! sore! sore sore sore sore!)
(sore! sore! sore! sore sore sore sore!)

From ancient times, young maidens
Dance in fleeting dreams
Thousands and thousands of times
They live now

Yes, women are always actresses
Not foxes, not foxes
Young vixens

Classical Japanese beauties,5 women are changeable
Smiling with their faces, crying in their hearts
"Yes, you're right," they say
And don't show their tears

Fox, fox, I am a vixen - Women are actresses

(soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya sore sore sore sore!)
(soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya soiya sore sore sore sore!)

(sore! sore! sore! sore sore sore sore!)
(sore! sore! sore! sore sore sore sore!)

From ancient times, young maidens
Sing in fleeting dreams
Thousands and thousands of times
They live here

Yes, women are always actresses
Not foxes, not foxes
Young maidens-
Don't underestimate us

Classical Japanese beauties, women are changeable
Always, forever, to not fade away
They set off fireworks

To bloom and then fall is a woman's fate
Smiling with their faces, crying in their hearts
Those pure young vixens

Ah!

  • 1. Alternately, "soiya": the sort of thing you shout when dancing at a festival. I would consider it equivalent to the English "hey!"
  • 2. These are also festival dance chants. "Chikichiki," "hirahira," and "kurukuru" are something like onomatopoeia, where the rhythm of the words is meant to represent the motions of dance moves. "Wasshoi" is a colloquialism meaning something like "let's do it!"
  • 3. This is a reference to rapid progression through seven different outfits in traditional Japanese dance (Kabuki, I believe).
  • 4. This is what the fox says in Japanese. So if someone were to ask you, "what does the fox say?" tell them "kon kon."
  • 5. "Yamato nadeshiko" literally means something like "pink flower of the Yamato" and refers to the traditional ideal of Japanese young womanhood (Yamato was the clan that the imperial family came from and is now a synonym for Japan). An alternate translation for this line might be "the ideal Japanese woman is changing."
