The Ballad of Estherica and Abarbanel

Word had gotten out that Don Isaac Abarbanel1

had found a match made in heaven - Estherica Uziel.2

How could a dowry be raised for her, [when] her father is only a tailor?

For years, everybody told her: "Nobody will want you."

Who pleaded and prayed

that Estherica would marry Don Isaac Abarbanel?

Don Isaac arrived in town, scattering an abundance of coins.

He also spoke words of wisdom, and all the patriarchs courted him.

In the corner of the marketplace, he found a black haired girl.

She's the fairest of all the townswomen, Don Isaac would choose her solely.

Who pleaded...

Estherica is graceful, her eyelids are lowered.

When he walked up to her, she instantly blushed in front of the rich son.

All the girls grew jealous of her: "How'd she find a successful match?"

They thought of her as a low-born daughter no man would take.

Who pleaded...

And today it was Estherica who walked to the chuppah.3

She held hands with Don Isaac, [looking] so glamorous and beautiful.

Grace and beauty are no trifle, the lineage is unimportant.

Don Isaac and Estherica have shown this time and time again.

1. A real life 15th century Portuguese Jewish statesman, exegete, philosopher and financier (1437-1508). "Don" (PT: Dom) was his title. The pronunciation, spelling and etymology of his surname are debated, with a popular theory being it originates from "אב רבן אל" (Av Rabban El, "father of the rabbis of God").
2. Assuming Estherica is fictional, the identity of Isaac's real wife seems to be unknown. However, his children's names are confirmed to be Judah (Leon) and Samuel. "-ica" is the feminine form of the Spanish/Ladino diminutive/affectionate suffix "-ico".
3. A canopy Jewish couples traditionally stand under during a (religious) wedding ceremony.
