The Man Behind The Champion

More than twenty years in a soccer ball
More than twenty years spent waiting for that penalty
To then discover that life
Was the whole match
Was in the sun rays
That ignited his boyhood dreams
Was in the wind that pushed his ponytail
Which to us looked like some divine sign

It was about looking for a place within an endless field
To later find joy
When time already seemed to be over
It was about falling and getting back up, listening to pain
Feeling a hug making its way to you
From the hearts of those who saw you charm the world with a soccer ball
Without ever hiding
The man behind the champion

Then all the passion
The blind and crazy determination
That the destination
At times is an obsession
The scars and the trophies
Reminding you who you were and what you are
And jerseys hanging out to dry
On the wire of a destiny that today you can change

And there, looking for a place
Within an endless field, to later find joy
When time already seemed to be over
It was about falling and getting back up, listening to pain
Feeling a hug making its way to you
From the hearts of those who saw you charm the world with a soccer ball
Without ever hiding
The man behind the champion

As Roberto, within all this love, is also a child of courage
(A child of courage)
Of that champion who once touched every ball as if it were life itself
I know you may think I'm exaggerating
But that penalty kick
Also taught me a little about life

The very reason I did not attempt to translate it myself was the fact I am not into soccer (especially not Italian soccer) and I was afraid to mess up something obvious. Thanks! :D

Neither am I. If it weren't for ContextReverso I definitely wouldn't be able to understand what 'rigore' means. xD But if you understood and liked it it makes me happy.
