The Poorest in the Old Society

The poorest souls in days of old,
Had neither land nor ox to hold.
Each day they hunted snakes for food,
Just dreaming of some wine and brew.

The mountain paths—slippery, strewn with stones,
Their trousers torn, their bamboo baskets prone.
Yet all in tatters, they remained unaware,
Still dropping caught snakes inside without a care.

These men were called “bottomless snake-bags”—a name,
That marked them scorned in that society’s game.
But in their hearts, content they’d stay,
“A dog in peace beats humans in disarray.”

Now we too are the poorest kind,
We spend what earnings earnings we can find.
The drive for striving fades from view,
And slacking is our righteous due.

We’re also “bottomless snake-bags”—they say, poor till the snakes slip out unnoticed away.
