Hawk Roosting
I sit in the top of the wood, my eyes closed.
Inaction, no falsifying dream
Between my hooked head and hooked feet:
Or in sleep rehearse perfect kills and eat.
The convenience of the high trees!
The air's buoyancy and the sun's ray
Are of advantage to me;
And the earth's face upward for my inspection.
My feet are locked upon the rough bark.
It took the whole of Creation
To produce my foot, my each feather:
Now I hold Creation in my foot
Or fly up, and revolve it all slowly -
I kill where I please because it is all mine.
There is no sophistry in my body:
My manners are tearing off heads -
The allotment of death.
For the one path of my flight is direct
Through the bones of the living.
No arguments assert my right:
The sun is behind me.
Nothing has changed since I began.
My eye has permitted no change.
I am going to keep things like this.

Il falco appollaiato
Siedo sul tetto del bosco, a occhi chiusi.
Inazione, nessun sogno falsificatore
tra l’uncino della mia testa e quelli delle mie zampe:
oppure nel sonno ripeto stragi perfette e mangio.
La comodità degli alberi alti!
La forza ascensionale dell’aria e i raggi del sole
sono a mio vantaggio;
e la faccia della terra arrovesciata si lascia ispezionare da me.
Le mie zampe serrano la ruvida corteccia.
Ci è voluta tutta intera la Creazione
per produrre questa zampa, ciascuna delle mie penne:
e ora stringo la Creazione tra le zampe
o volo in alto, e la rigiro tutta piano piano –
uccido dove mi va perché è tutta mia.
Non conosce sofisticherie il mio corpo:
staccare teste è il mio stile –
distribuire morte.
Perché l’unica traiettoria del mio volo passa diretta
per le ossa dei viventi.
Il mio diritto trascende ogni argomentazione:
il sole è dietro di me.
Niente è cambiato da quando ho cominciato.
Il mio occhio non ha permesso cambiamenti.
Intendo mantenere tutto così.
