La giava rossa
Sazia d’hotel, di tabarin, di cabaret,2
la bella dama volle trascinar con sé

«Non senti ad ogni mossa che il giuoco è mortale?
Tu troppo mi piaci: o i tuoi baci o un pugnale,
altro scampo non v’è.»
Così le sussurrò l’apache, danzando.
Ella s’abbandonò: ‹M’avrai!› «E quando?»
‹Quando vuoi tu, padrone mio.›
Dopo una notte di frenetica follia,
ella scomparve e in lui restò tal bramosia
che la volle riavere, la cercò, la trovò,
ma lei finse non conoscerlo e altera passò;
l’apache furente in un agguato la ghermì,
ella tentando di sfuggirgli lo blandì;
astuzia vana fu, ei la portò laggiù:
«Mia signora, un ballo ancora
e poi, giuro, mai più.»
«Senti: è la giava rossa, ch’è tutta una trama
di tragica sorte, la tua morte,
bella dama, l’hai voluta danzar!»
Ei, con fulminea mossa, piantò la sua lama
nel cuor della dama; poi la volle,
come folle, sulla bocca baciar.
„Occhio! la polizia!„ qualcuno gridò.
Tutti fuggiron via, lui solo restò.
‟Sei stato tu?” «Son stato io!»
«Madama ghigliottina,
un’ultima giava m’invita a danzar…
a più tardi mia damina: possiamo andar!»
- 1. La giava è un tipo di ballo del primo dopoguerra.
- 2. Il tabarin era un locale per spettacoli di varietà.
Il cabaret è sia uno spettacolo di varietà sia il locale dove viene eseguito. - 3. La musetta (o bal musette) è una danza francese di fine Ottocento.
gigolette = ragazza di liberi costumi; prostituta; ragazza della malavita. - 4. gargote (o gargotta) = bettola, taverna, osteria.
- 5. Riferimento a I fiori del male di Baudelaire e al serial cinematografico western I cavalieri della notte.
The Red Java
Fed up with hotels, with tabarins, with cabarets,2
the beautiful lady wanted to drag down with her
the party of her noble wooers
in a bal musette of gigolettes and malefactors.3
In the shadiest and most loathsome gargote4
among the flowers of evil and the moon riders,5
the party entered, she alone didn’t tremble,
a java was beginning, and an Apache asked her [to dance].
«This is the red java, which is all an intrigue6
of love and death; beautiful lady,
you are dancing your fate with me.»
«Can’t you feel that the game is deadly at every move?7
I like you too much: either your kisses or a dagger
- there’s no other way out.»
This way the Apache whispered to her, dancing.
She gave in: ‹You’ll have me!› «When?»
‹Whenever you wish, my master.›
After a night of frantic craze,
she disappeared, and he was left with such a yearning
that he wanted to have her again, he looked for her, he found her,
but she pretended not to know him, and passed by haughtily;
the Apache - livid - seized her in an ambush,

- 2. tabarin and cabaret were kinds of pubs or nightclubs where entertainment shows were performed.
- 3. bal musette is a French dance from the late 1800s.
gigolette = sexually uninhibited girl; prostitute; girl hanging around in disreputable places. - 4. gargote = dive, tavern, sleazy bar.
- 5. Reference to The Flowers of Evil by Baudelaire, and to the western film serial The Moon Riders (translated into Italian as I cavalieri della notte {the night knights}).
- 6. trama = plot, intrigue, weft.
- 7. It means both the moves of the "love game" and the moves of the dancing girl.
