I have tried to do a pretty literal translation, without any attempt to capture the poetry and lyricism of the original, because that's the best I can do! I'm hoping it will help people who like the song but don't know French to get an idea of what it's about. I've also done it because I couldn't find a translation into English anywhere else.
It's one of my favourite Bécaud songs, and I think it has a timeless message that is recognisable by everyone, and applies to everyone.
