Rootless Weed

Rootless Weed 1

Lets positively capitalize on not having a place where I belong here.
Singing, I was born and lived in this land in solitude. My youth still feels like it was last week.
My roots grew old and withered away, I was being left out and driven out by my surroundings.
Wherever I go I get repelled into the edge of the corner. But to live is no shame.
Covered up in the corner of the crowd I realized, this land is my habitat.
If there is no water around, I myself make a move by any means.
Even if the environment changes, persevere, stick it out, stick it out, stick it out, stick out roots, yes, I am spreading out my roots here.
Throwing out my chest I turn towards the light, thrown away Korean rose; mugunghwa. 2

Rootless weed, roots got torn off.
Rootless weed, brought to unfamiliar soil.
Rootless weed, thrown away in the corner.
surviving here, two strands of rootless weed.

Rootless weed, thrown away in the corner.
surviving here, Japanese rootless weed. 3

Born in this land and sprouted in solitude, the flower which got left in the corner withered.
It is as if I am searching for a place to belong, and you are a "fit", and I am "not a fit" 4
When I peek through the telescope I see the paradise I yearn for, but of course my feet live here and now.
Life wisdom that no matter how hard I study I can't get is going towards my life.
After all this is where I have to work on.
We are there for each other, but I can't deny the difference that is my toxic unique personality.
They would probably say that a runaway child should just go home, but I have no place to go home to. I have no home. In this constitutional state, which doesn't cry about this neglecting play, there opened up a gaping hole.
Flowers bloom, then scatter and wither away, but we haven't yet, haven't yet even bloomed.

A message being send out from a time I was still having a dripping nose, the (different) language being spoken, and being separated from the sacred place.
I had the mental image of being abandoned alone in the wilderness.
I am quietly reflecting on the damage of living on.
I still don't have a title since the time I was a brat. Even if historically, my existence is like a blink, the important thing is; where I am now. And where I will die. Just that.

It's because I am rootless weed that I thought about it. It's because I am rootless weed that I could do my best.
Rootless weed, minorities can't act proud, no one can choose the land they are born in.
It's hard to breathe, feeling small and confined, even my wish to spread my wings isn't coming true, I am rootless weed living in the small space between countries.

Rootless weed, roots got torn off.

I lost my home country and once again search for a place to belong. One day I will surely blossom a beautiful flower.
We where thrown onto this land, abandoned, but we are standing here and are singing.

But we are standing here and are singing.

Two strands of rootless weed who grew up in Japan.
  • 1. The proper translation would be Duckweed, but that doesn't convey the second meaning of rootless person, but just translating as rootless person also doesn't fit as there are many metaphors with plants and flowers.
  • 2. mugunghwa is the Korean name of the rose of Sharon / Korean rose / Hibiscus syriacus. He sings it twice, once the Japanese name, once the Korean name written with kanji (which also can be read in Japanese)
  • 3. There is a wordplay here with "two strands (ni-hon) of rootless weed" and "Japanese (nihon)rootless weed" sounding exactly the same / being homophones
  • 4. Another wordplay with two times "maru de" with different meanings each times. Also the transliteration missed a る there, it should be 君は◯(まる)で僕は×だ
