Boe Muliache

A s'iscuru Compare
mi’che ‘ortat in boe,
borro che i‘su mare
e gherro a malu proe.

Muilende in carrela
sas fèminas si tremen
grogas che i’sa tela:
"Malaitu su sèmene!"

Cando arveschet die
so unu cristianu
siat chi fetat nie
o sole a su manzanu.

Ma cando torro a Cuddu
sos balentes si tremen,
sa pedde a tuddu-tuddu:
"Malaitu su sèmene!"

No m'ammento ne tempus e ne logu
cando intro cun dimònios in giogu.

Translation

Boe Muliache

In the dark, the Buddy1
turns me into an ox,
I roar like the sea,
I fight for evil purposes.

When I bellow on the street
the women tremble,
pale like linen:
“Damn the seed!”

At daybreak
I am a Christian,2
whether it snows
or it’s sunny in the morning.

But when I return to That One 1
the brave men tremble,
they get gooseflesh:
“Damn the seed!”

I don’t remember any time or place
When I get into play with devils.

  • 1. a. b. Compare (Buddy) and Cuddu (That One) are euphemisms to avoid naming the devil, thereby evoking his presence.
  • 2. It means a man, the opposite of a beast.
