The Devil Came to Havana

The devil came to Havana,
Filled with fury up to his balls,
Looking for a Cuban soul
To fill his quota
For it seems that hell
Is getting too small,
And to feed its fire,
They need Caribbean souls.

He put on some local threads1
Satan lit a stogie
He wanted everyone to think
He was just one Cuban more.
And he started to strut
Toward the malecón2
When suddenly
in that corner
Something caught his attention.

It was Cheito, the tres3 player
A virtuoso of his instrument
Wearing his rumba threads,
Wasting his talent.
The devil, full of attitude,
And hankering to test him
Said: "I can outplay you
And I‘m willing to prove it.
If you beat me, I’ll give you
A tres made of solid gold and diamonds.
But should you lose, Cuban,
Your soul shall suffice.”

Cheito confidently said:
Go for it, Lucifer,
I’m betting on myself,
I’ll risk myself
To win or to lose.”
And a band of demons
Suddenly appeared
With the devil on the tres
Listen to their groove...

Cheito stared at him and said:
“You sure can play
But, in the top’s house
One should never dance.
Dude, don’t act crazy,
And carefully observe
So you can learn a little.
This is how the tres is played"

Listen to him jam4
Cheito, the tres player
Cuban musician
Pride of Diezmero5
He puts his heart into it
Each time he plays a son6
Play Cheito!

"Holy smoke! You sure can play..."

The antichrist slowly
Bowed his head
And accepting his defeat,
Commented with candor:
“Accuse me of something else,
But never of arrogance.”
And placed at his feet
A tres made of solid gold and diamonds.

“It’s not necessary,
Dude, that’s not what I want,
No, I only ask that you take
Another passenger with you,
Do it with great caution
And without much of an uproar
Take that scumbag,
Take that friend of yours,
The one that misgoverns us,
That oppresses and mistreats us,
The one that cut our wings,
That snake,
That rat,
And the moment he gets to hell,
That miserable bastard,
That day, Satan,
That day, we’re even".

Listen to him jam
Cheito, the tresplayer
Cuban musician
Pride of Diezmero
He puts his heart into it
Each time he plays a son

Play Cheito play!
Your rhythm provokes me
Play Cheito play!
But let no one shut your mouth
Play Cheito play!
Your music is pure passion
Play Cheito play!
The new generation of the son
Play Cheito play!
Scoot over here
Hear my song
Play Cheito play!
'Cause this is my music
That cures tears
Play Cheito play!
Look how delicious
I want to dance to it
Play Cheito play!
Cheíto will make you enjoy
Play Cheito play!...
