On space, dreamy and beautiful,
The moon appears slowly on the horizon
Adorning the night, like a magical maiden
That prepares herself and embellishes dreamily.
Her soul wishing to remain beautiful,
Screams to heaven and earth, to all Nature.
The bird silences his sad little complaints
And the sea reflects, all its richness…
The soft moonlight now awakens
The cruel melancholy that laughs and cries.

The compositor Heitor Villa Lobos, born in Brazil, did his musical training in his country and in Europe
He was fascinated by J. Sebastian Bach’s Music, and it’s the reason he composed «Las Bachianas Brasileiras», a sequence of nine musical suites.
Each suite is a combination of Brazilian folkloric tunes and Bach’s style.
Thus, the “Bachiana Brasileira N°5”, for Soprano and 8 violoncellos that Joan Baez sings has 2 titles :
1) “Aria” (borrowed to Bach)/” Cantilena “(Brazilian title)
2) “Dança” (borrowed to Bach)/” Martelo” (Brazilian title)
The “Bachiana Brasileira N°5 “(1938) is the most famous of the Bachianas. It has been transcribed for guitar and soprano by Villa Lobos himself, as he played violoncello, piano, clarinet, and guitar!
