Original lyrics
Klingenschmiede
Dort unter tiefem Felsgestein,
vom Auge abgeschieden,
dringt er doch in die Welt hinein,
der Klang unzähliger Schmieden.
Fauler Neid blitzt vehement,
Durch der Fassade Dunst,
Kennt ihr doch weder Element,
noch uns're Fertigkeitenkunst.
Wir sind in jeder Klinge,
die ihr im Kampf erhebt,
auf dass sie Sieg erringe,
Wenn sie uns gen Herzen strebt!
Doch nur in alten Flammen,
kann jener Stahl gedeih'n,
der führt uns heut' zusammen
und lässt Kreuze Splitter spei'n!
Wir sind gezeichnet und vernarbt
von Kohlen und vom Leben.
Haben am Feuer lang gedarbt,
um nun die Schwerter zu erheben!
Zersplittert wie das falsche Schwert,
die Eitelkeit der Ränke,
ein Hämmern dann die Nacht durchfährt,
sollt ihr der Schmiede gedenken!
Translation
Blade Forge
There, beneath deep stone and rock1,
hidden2 from the eye
it still invades into the world,
the sound of countless forges.
We are inside of every blade
that you 3 raise in battle
so that it may claim victory
When it strives towards the heart!
But only in old flames
this steel can thrive
that brings us together today
and makes crosses spew splinters!
We are marked and scarred
by coals and by life.
(We) have starved6 at the fire for a long time
to raise the swords now!
Shatter(ed) like the wrong sword
the vanity of the intrigues,
(when) a hammering then goes through the night,
you3 shall remember the forge!

I like these lyrics because they are such a great metaphor for composing.
