Translation

Petrona From The Southern Land

Woman, you're so beautiful
for so long I've cried for you,
you don't know how much I love you.

Petrona, from the southern land1
all I speak now is your name,
I've already given you my heart.

Unknowingly you tied us together,
now all I ever think about is you,
you tied me up with your hair
your long and black strands of hair.

I don't know what to do,
I'm drunk and I cry for you,
many people laugh at me.

If you had loved me just a little,
and if you had wanted to be with me,2
I wouldn't wander like I do now.

I miss you when you're not here,
where are you? where do you go?
I love you because you're beautiful,
and so I'd die at your feet.

Petrona, don't you know
how much it pains my heart so?
if only you'd give me your love.

Only then would I stop crying,
I beg you, Petrona
give it to me as if it were charity.

I don't know what to do,
I'm drunk and I cry for you,
many people laugh at me.

If you had loved me just a little,
and if you had wanted to be with me,
I wouldn't wander like I do now.

  • 1. neza guéte means '(the path) deep from the south' (but it's translated as 'from the path below' in the Spanish that I've provided). However, which part in the South is unknown. César is from La Ventosa, but spent many years living in Juchitán, Oaxaca (which is located north of La Ventosa). I'd make more sense if he's saying the Petrona is from Juchitán.
  • 2. the word after that is 'virgencita' or actually, 'virgen' because the word for virgencita would be 'xhunaxhi huiini', which means 'little virgin'. He's comparing her to a saint, something heavenly. The entire line would be 'and if you had wanted to be together (together being in a relationship or even marriage), oh heavenly girl'.
