Xica da Silva (or Chica da Silva) was a nickname given by the public to a Brazilian woman by the name Francisca da Silva, born around 1732 in Vila do Príncipe (modern-day Serro), in the state of Minas Gerais; and died in 1796 in Diamantina, Minas Gerais. She was a child of Maria da Costa, a slave from an area around the Gulf of Guinea, Africa; and a Portuguese man, Antônio Caetano de Sá.
She was a slave all her life untill she met João Fernandes de Oliveira, a contractor of diamond mines, who originally also bought her as a slave. However, they eventually fell in love, and she became his wife, which caused a scandal in colonial Brazil. It ultimately led to the rise of the myth of the slave who became a queen.
