This quartet, sometimes known as 'The Canon Quartet' is from Fidelio, Beethoven's only opera.
The plot focuses on Leonore who is trying to free her husband (Florestan) who is a prisoner. For this reason she disguises herself as a boy, calling herself Fidelio.
Leonore manages to get a job with Rocco the jailer, but his daughter Marzelline then falls in love with 'Fidelio'.
This makes Jaquino (Rocco's assistant) jealous as he is himself in love with Marzelline.
In this song each character expresses how they feel about the situation. The singers come in one at a time in a canon (every eight bars), so the lyrics overlap with each other.
