The bird becomes a kind of prophecy: everyone who sighted it would come out alive. The music builds in intensity to a dramatic climax; the end is not heroic.
Among the stories of those days is that of an officer who narrates how during one of the rescue trips, his ship changed course to observe a small boat with a large white goose perched on its mast and whose crew member layed dead from a machine gun blast. Then they realized that there was a mine in front of them, which they would have collided with if they had not changed course. They detonated it with shots and the resulting waves sank the small boat. The goose, until then inseparable, flew around three times and then left heading west."
