What Will History Say?
- Führer's:
"Führer" is a German word meaning "leader" or "guide".
It became infamous when Adolf Hitler adopted the title "Der Führer" in 1934, after merging the roles of Chancellor and President to become absolute dictator of Nazi Germany. Since then, the term has been inseparable from fascism, authoritarianism, and militarism. In English today, it implies a dangerous, all-powerful ruler with no respect for democratic limits.
Trump and Putin are now increasingly called “Führer” because of their recent actions and rhetoric. Trump has vowed to act as a “dictator on day one”, promised mass deportations, used dehumanizing language for political enemies, and threatened to jail opponents. He also praised Putin, blamed Ukraine for provoking Russia, and questioned continued U.S. support for Ukraine — aligning himself, even rhetorically, with an aggressor. Putin, meanwhile, continues waging a full-scale, unprovoked war against Ukraine, crushing dissent at home, and ruling through fear and propaganda.
The term “Führer” is used to group them as symbols of rising authoritarianism. It mocks their shared contempt for liberal democracy and admiration for brute power. The German word invokes Hitler deliberately — not as a casual insult, but as a historical warning. It signals that both leaders are seen as threats to global stability and democratic values.
