The Pirate's Song

With ten guns on each side,
stern wind, full sail
it doesn't cut the sea, it flies
a brig sailing ship
Pirate vessel that they call,
for its bravery, the Feared One,
in every known sea
from one to the other to edge.

Sail, my sailboat
without fear,
that neither enemy ship
nor storm, nor fair weather
your course to twist achieves,
nor to hold your courage.

Twenty dams
we have done
despite
the English.
And have surrendered
their banners
a hundred nations
to my feet.

Because my ship is my treasure,
because freedom is my god,
my law, the force and the wind,
my only homeland, the sea.

The moon in the sea shimmers
on the canvas1the wind moans,
and rises in soft movement
silver and blue waves;
and goes the pirate captain,
singing joyfully in the stern,
Asia on one side, Europe on the other,
and there in front of it2Istanbul:
Over there; move fierce war
blind kings
for one more palm of land;
that I here; have for mine
everything the wild sea encompasses,
to whom no one imposed laws.
And there's no beach
whichever it may be,
nor flag
of splendor,
that doesn't feel
my right over it
and become a chest for my courage.

In the dams
I divide
what we caught
equally;
I only want
for wealth
the unrivaled
beauty.

Because my ship is my treasure,
because freedom is my god,
my law, the force and the wind,
my only homeland, the sea.

I'm sentenced to death!
I laugh
if luck doesn't abandon me,
the same one who condemns me,
I'll hang from some lateen,
perhaps; on his own ship.

And if I fall
What is life?
for lost
I already have it,3
when the yoke
of the slavery,
like a brave man,
I shook off

And fom the thunder
to the violent sound,
and from the wind
when reverberating,
I sleep
calm,
lulled
by sea.

Because my ship is my treasure,
because freedom is my god,
my law, the force and the wind,
my only homeland, the sea.

  • 1. I think "sail" but not sure
  • 2. the ship, but could be "him" the captain
  • 3. I gave it up for lost
