Original lyrics
Cessate, omai cessate (RV 684)
Ah, ch'infelice sempre
Me vuol Dorilla ingrata,
Ah sempre piú spietata,
Mi stringe à lagrimar.
Spietata, mi stringe à lagrimar
Per me non v'è ristoro
Per me non v'è speme.
E il fier martoro e le mie pene
Solo la morte può consolar.
Translation
Cease, now cease
Oh, how for ever unhappy
Ungrateful Dorilla wishes me
Oh, ever more merciless
She brings me to tears
Merciless, she brings me to tears
For me, there is no relief
For me, there is no hope
And the cruel torment and my sorrow
Only death can console

Author's comments:
"Ah, ch'infelice sempre" is an aria (one, the first, of two) from the cantata "Cessate, omai cessate", which constitutes a musical form prevalent in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The orchestral part of the aria, with the pizzicato harp possibly representing dripping tears, forms part of the soundtrack to the 2005 South Korean film "Lady Vengeance". The cantata is also to be heard in Aurelio Grimaldi's film "Le buttane" (1994).

One of Vivaldi's secular cantatas. Sung by the magnificent counter tenor Andreas Scholl.
