Долг Украине
Знаете ли вы
украинскую ночь?
Нет,
вы не знаете украинской ночи!
Здесь
небо
от дыма
становится черно́,
и герб
звездой пятиконечной вточен.
Где горилкой,
удалью
и кровью
Запорожская
бурлила Сечь,
проводов уздой
смирив Днепровье,
Днепр
заставят
на турбины течь.
И Днипро́
по проволокам-усам
электричеством
течёт по корпусам.
Небось, рафинада
и Гоголю надо!
___________
Мы знаем,
курит ли,
пьёт ли Чаплин;
мы знаем
Италии безрукие руины;

Translation
Debt to Ukraine
Do you know
the Ukrainian night?
No,
you don't know the Ukrainian night!
Here
the sky
turns black
from smoke
And the emblem
of the five-pointed star is sharpened.
Where with horilka,1
prowess,
and blood,
Seethed
the Zaporozhian Sich2,
With a bridle of wires
having humbled the Dnieper,
The Dnieper
is forced
to flow into the turbines.
And Dnipro
by wire-whiskers
Like electricity
flows through the buildings.
Probably, even Gogol
needs sugar cubes! [?]
---
We know
whether Chaplin smokes
or drinks;
We know
Italy's armless ruins;
We know
how Douglas's
tie is spotted...
But what do we know
of the face of Ukraine?
A Russian's
cargo of knowledge
is slight —
For those nearby
they have little esteem.
What they know is
Ukrainian borscht,
What they know is
Ukrainian salo.3
And from the culture
they skimmed the foam:
Besides
the two
illustrious Tarases —
Bulba4
and the famous Shevchenko5 —
You can't squeeze out anything else
no matter how much you try.
And if pressed,
he blushes like a rose
And propounds
a new argument:
He'll bring out and recount
a couple of curiosities,
Jokes
about the Ukrainian language.6
I say to myself
Comrade Moskal7
Don't kid around
about Ukraine
Learn
this language
on banners
in lexicons of scarlet,
This language
is majestic and simple:
"Can you feel the trumpets playing
The time for payment has come"8
How can it be
shabbier
and quieter
Than the
well-trained
word "hear"?9
I
thought up a lot of words for you,
Pondering them,
I want just one thing:
That the words
of all
my
poems would become
As full-weighted
as that word "feel".
---
It is hard
to crush
people into one,
Don't be too proud
of yourself.
Do we know the Ukrainian night?
No,
we don't know the Ukrainian night.

Author's comments:
A fairly literal and prosaic translation, let me know if I missed anything. Please listen to the original (even if you don't speak Russian) to get a sense of how it sounds.
