Original lyrics
El exiliado del sur
Un ojo dejé en Los Lagos
por un descuido casual,
el otro quedó en Corral
en un boliche de tragos;
recuerdo que mucho estrago
de niño vio el alma mía,
miserias y alevosías
anudan mi pensamiento,
entre las aguas y el viento
me pierdo en la lejanía.
Mi brazo derecho en Lanco
quedó, señores oyentes,
el otro por San Vicente
cayó, no sé con qué fin;
mi pecho en Curacautín
lo veo en un jardincillo,
mis manos en Maitencillo
saludan por Pelequén,
mi boca en Perquilauquén
sopla sobre un caramillo.
Se m’enredó en Tranapuente
un pie el cruzar una esquina,
y el otro en la Quiriquina
se me hunde mares adentro,
mi corazón descontento
latió con pena en Temuco
y me ha llorado en Calbuco,
de frío por una escarcha,
voy y enderezo mi marcha
por la cuesta ’e Chacabuco.
Mis nervios dejo en Collayque,
la sangr’en San Sebastián,
y en la ciudad de Chillán
la calma me baja a cero,
mi riñonada en Cabrero
destruye una caminata,
y en una calle de Itata
se me rompe el instrumento,
y paso por Nacimiento
una mañana de plata.

Translation
The exile from the south
I left an eye in Los Lagos
by some casual mistake,
the other one I left in Corral
in a drinks tavern;
I remember that my soul
saw so much destruction when I was a child,
misery and betrayal
flood my mind,
among the water and the wind
I get lost in the distance.
My left arm was left
in Buin*, my dear listeners,
the another one fell in San Vicente,
I don't know with what purpose,
I can see my chest
in a little garden in Curacautín,
my hands in Maitencillo
waving in Pelequén,
my blouse* in Perquilauquén
is catching some little fishes.*
My foot got stuck in San Rosendo*
when I walked around a corner,
and the other one in Quiriquina
is sinking down the ocean,
my unhappy heart
beat with sorrow in Temuco
and has cried of coldness in Calbuco
because of the frost.
I go and straighten my lead
down Chacabuco's slope.
My nerves I leave in Graneros*,
my blood at San Sebastián,
and in the city of Chillán
my peace goes down to zero,
my kidneys in Cabrero
destroying a stroll,
and in a street in Itata
my instrument breaks,
and I go past Nacimiento
in a silver morning.
