My Gift

If only I had and oh, if only I could
Bring you a gift as big as my love
I would have gifted you the essence of roses and the secrets of dreams, dreams, childhood dreams
And I would have scrambled up on the stars, pulled on the silver threads
And I'd ask the angels and mermaids to sew you a divine blouse
And the sea, in the sea, I'd slip by the fish and dive, silent like a thief
And pluck froth, pluck froth from the sea foam and the loose braids of sunlight
And grasp a glimmer and transform it into kisses in the colour of my rosy longing
And take the smiles of a child and the innocence from his eyes
And take the flirtations of a spring wedding and all its perfumed scents
And from every bird, I'd pluck a feather and furnish your path with the feathers of freedom1
And in the meadow, I'd race the bees and bring you a bouquet of bright flowers
And I'd fly with the dreams and fantasies to countries, who knows where they were founded

And I'd braid strands of clouds into a swing for you on a fairy's shoulders
And sew you blankets from caresses and mattresses from a soft heart
And a quilt from magic and pillows from the hair of Phoenician gods
And I'd sprinkle on your eyelids the same bliss of sleep that evaded mine
And let a dream tell you love stories about yourself, to yourself
Fantasies, if only I could create fantasies as I intend to
I'd make you me and clothe you with my natural soul
But if the wishes didn't come true, I'd surrender my life to worship
From me to you, I'd leave three words; my love and ah2 and sighs
A gift to a heart from a heart that loved you
If only I had and oh, if only I could
