Bien des siècles depuis les siècles du Chaos,

La flamme par torrents jaillit de ce cratère,

Et le panache igné du volcan solitaire

Flamba plus haut encor que les Chimborazos.

Nul bruit n’éveille plus la cime sans échos.

Où la cendre pleuvait l’oiseau se désaltère ;

Le sol est immobile et le sang de la Terre,

La lave, en se figeant, lui laissa le repos.

Pourtant, suprême effort de l’antique incendie,

À l’orle de la gueule à jamais refroidie,

Éclatant à travers les rocs pulvérisés,

Comme un coup de tonnerre au milieu du silence,

Dans le poudroîment d’or du pollen qu’elle lance,

S’épanouit la fleur des cactus embrasés.

Translation

Centuries since the time of Chaos,

Flame bursts in jets from this crater,

And the magmatic cloud of a lonely volcano

Still burns higher than Chimborazos.

No noise now awakens the peak without an echo.

Where ash fell, a bird quenches its thirst;

The terrain is motionless, and the blood from the Earth,

The lava, coagulating, has given it a respite.

And yet, the immense effort of ancient fire,

On the edge of an eternally frozen mouth,

Breaking through shattered rocks,

Like a thunderbolt amidst the silence,

In the golden dust of pollen it throws,

Blooms with the flower of flaming cacti
