The Law of the Wilderness
Click to see the original lyrics (Spanish)
I engraved the stalk of a maguey with your name
interlaced with mine.
Like proof, before the law of the wilderness,
that we were there, in love
You yourself chose the stalk,
the prettiest, the slimmest
and even told me to also engrave it with
two hearts and an arrow
Now you say that you don't remember.
That none of it is true, that they are only words.
I am at peace because in the end,
in our romance, the stalks speak
The same night that you renounced my love,
you also cut down that stalk
You imagined that if they saw it,
to you it would be like an affront
You forgot that the maguey knew
what you swore on our night
and that in its way it could also
recriminate you with a reproach
I don't if you believe in the strange things
that my eyes see. Perhaps you will be impressed
The new stalks that sprout on the maguey
come marked with our names.

About translator
I think this translation is more in tune with the poetic nature of the song. A maguey is not an aloe plant, it is more commonly know here as an agave. But it is also known as a maguey. Tequila is made from this plant.
