Those were the sad days

I have to tell you
a really sad story.
It starts like all the tales
with a girl in love.

At the beginning of the story
the weather was nice.
Say goodbye to the fog1,
it was a hot day.

Do you remember these fields
where you used to take a stroll
with the girl you loved
in the background?

Picture this memory,
it has a sweet taste.
Now look at her face,
it's starting to fade.

You nearly get it now
You nearly get it now.
And you know the rest:

" I'm sorry, but I don't love you.
That's just how it is, I'm really sorry.
There is this girl I can't...
can't get out of my mind.
Don't worry, that's for the best.
I don't want to make you suffer.
Look at me, look at me.
Girls like you
should not even smile at me.
Not even smile at me. "

Time for the ending,
the fog spreads.
She doesn't hold your hand
strolling along the pond.

Along the pond,
the fog spreads.
Oh, along the pond.
Along the pond.
The fog spreads
The fog spreads.
Along, along the pond.

  • 1. "on dit.." could mean "we say" or "we said", but it could also be a kind of mild exhortation ("let's say..."). Since I picture her talking to her would-be lover, that's the way I translated it (the fog being a symbol of his hazy memory)

stanza 2 line 3 surely has no imperative "Say"? I read it as "We said" (passé simple, with subject On) or perhaps "People said"..

Other than that it's a great translation
