Perperişan

Canıma yetti belalı bekarlık
Yanmalı hangisine?
Ne yapıp etmeli, oğlanı sormalı
Bir koşu annesine

O bana gelmeli, tadıma varmalı
O cici toy bebe onun nesine?
Diyo' şeytan "üstüne atla da sal kuşu hanesine"

Yanıma yatmalı, beni de katmalı
Çiğnediği sakızın nanesine
Diyo' şeytan "üstüne atla da sal kuşu hanesine"

Canım ister soysunlar beni
Onla bi' yastığa koysunlar
Perperişan bulsunlar beni
İster çarmıha gersinler

Hani ikimiz bi' gömlekte
Kalmaz bu muallakta
Kara sevdam, dönmek yok
İsterse topa koysunlar

Canıma yetti belalı bekarlık
Yanmalı hangisine?
Ne yapıp etmeli, oğlanı sormalı
Bir koşu annesine

O bana gelmeli, tadıma varmalı
O cici toy bebe onun nesine?

Wretched

I am sick of this tought single life
Which one of all the troubles should I worry about?
I should do whatever needs to be done, ask for the boy,
Running up to his mother1

He should come to me, savor me
That pretty callow baby is no good for him
The devil says "jump on him and let the bird into his house"2

He should lie by me, should mix me
Into the mint of the gum he chews
The devil says "jump on him and let the bird into his house"2

I wish they would undress me
Put me on the same pillow as him3
They would find me all wretched
Let them crucify me if they wish

You know, both of us in the same shirt4
This will not remain in doubt
My blind love, no going back
Let them blast us if they want

  • 1. a. b. asking for his hand for marriage
  • 2. a. b. c. d. the devil says ... is a phrase used to describe a temptation
  • 3. a. b. sharing a pillow is a common metaphor for marriage but it could also just mean sharing a bed I suppose
  • 4. a. b. I dont know if I am overreaching with this one but sharing a shirt sounds like it could be a reference to a alevi-bektaşi sufi ritual muhasiplik. Two men share a shirt and are announced brothers for life and afterlife.

sevgili kertenkele kardeşim,

#4 of your footnote is reffering actually to the fact that this song is a gay-song
mabel matiz (fatih karaca) is actually a gay, and he supports the LBGTQI-movement
it reffers actually to a longing to be together (to have sex) with a man in bed

in the last 2 weeks there was a lot of fuss about this song in the turkish media
and in the final there were citizens filled complaints (via CİMER) at the courts via the 'ministry of child, woman and family'
that this songs harms the family/society relationsships, etc...

Hi, I am aware of the fuss, I dont understand the point you are trying to reach here though, could you elaborate?

The song is written to a man without doubt, he explained in his Instagram story that he could be the bard that has witnessed the story and telling it, so it is open to interpretation who the poet is in this story. He also uses LGBTQ+ themes in some of his songs and of course it could be a love story between two men as well as a man and a woman. In either case, the person singing it is more assertive I guess, and he wants to ask for his hand from his mother, which traditionally is almost always a man asking for a womans hand from her father. It could be gay, could be straight, it is probably feminist.

Mabel Matiz often uses references to sufi tradition, he does it in most of his songs and music videos. You could see it in all of his albums to some extent. Here in this line you are referring to, the song talks about them sharing a shirt. It is not a direct reference but it reminded me of a bektaşi tradition I have heard about, muhasiplik. It contains a ritual where two men are announced brothers for life and afterlife, and their families are also bound together. It is not inherently sexual or romantic. I am not sure if referencing this tradition was his main intent, but I wanted to share it with listeners as context.

Its not the first time a song by mabel matiz is censored so I didn't think it was worthy of mentioning when I translated the song. But as things escalated more than I imagined, I guess it makes sense to address the controversy and stuff as well. He was escorted by police to the court house today to testify against accusations on obscenity for this song. The ministry wanted the song to be censored but I think it is not removed from any of the streaming platforms yet.

Being gay or writing gay songs is not illegal in turkey so the accusations are not related to that, but the interpretation of some other parts, but the hate going on definitely is related to it

one of it seems to be words like 'cici toy bebe' and 'oğlan' being interpreted as a young man, but that does not make sense, we have many songs that refer to grown ass women as 'kız' and 'bebek' and no one says thats pedofilic because its not.

the other part is 'let the bird into his house' part, he says that it means sending news with a bird to come ask for his hand in marriage.

He mentions that he stopped singing it after the lyrics got misunderstood, and that he did not think it would be interpreted that way.

i only wrote a reference to your 4th footnote
imho it doesn’t refer to the sufi ritual
i am also aware of whole the court-fuss nowadays
thank you for your kind respond though👍🏼
