Seven tears

Seven tears, I'll cry tonight
Seven tears will fall on my palm
They come when no one's there
They come when a man1 is alone

The city is empty, where are you now
For seven days, I'd been calling you
For seven nights, I'd been without sleep2

The city is empty, where are you now
For seven days, I'd been calling you
For seven nights, I'd been without sleep

Seven tears, I'll cry tonight
Seven tears will fall on my palm
They come when no one's there
They come when a man is alone

Seven tears like seven roses
Seven tears, that's not little
Am I really3 reaching my hands into nothing again?
Say something, say anything

I'm looking at your pictures, letters
There's more of them every day
I remember the words you
were telling me before you left4
We will be back together
Before the birches turn green again5

Seven tears, salty as the sea
Seven tears, and you in each one of them
Weird thoughts fight inside of me
Have we ever loved each other?

Seven tears like seven roses
Seven tears, that's not little
Am I really reaching my hands into nothing again?
Say something, say anything

Seven tears I'll cry tonight
Seven tears will fall on my palm
They come when no one's there
They come when a man is alone

  • 1. "Čovjek" means "human" but is often used for "man"
  • 2. lit. "without (a) dream"; to be without a dream/have a dreamless night is a phrase that means to spend a sleepless night
  • 3. "Zar" is a word that doesn't exist in English, but is used in questions that express surprise, wonder or disbelief. In this case, I translated it with "really". "Zar" is often used in polar questions and in those cases it stands before "ne" (not): Zar ne znaš = don't you know?; Ona je pametna, zar ne? = She's smart, isn't she?, etc.
  • 4. "odlazak" = departure leaving. I translated it as "before you left" because I don't think "before your leaving" works well in English and "departure" reminds me more of some temporary leave for travelling rather than leaving a person. Also, there's a typo in the original, it should be "odlaska"
  • 5. The two lines are inverted in the English translation to sound more natural
