Sylvia's Christmas Song

And so has Christmas again reached the North,
Christmas has also reached the chest of men.
And the spruces are brightly gleaming their light
Already in the small cottages.
But above up on the perch there still is
The cage, that holds in my little chirper.
And quieted has the moaning of the prison.
Oh, the sorrows who could remember of the singer?

Where the cypresses are scenting also now in the winter,
I sit on the branch of the handsomest tree.
Where the water is glistening, wine is the most foaming
And the weather is always that of May's.
And Etna far away so beautiful I see,
Ah, all this dizzies and dazes my head.
And little songs so gently in the groves sing,
The more luscious joys just who could tell of!

You the brightest of stars now shed your light
To my Finland so far away!
And when dies out that twinkling of yours,
You bless that land of memories!
Another worth it I can't get anywhere,
Most dear and valued for me is always the land of Finland!
And praise for it sings the song of Sylvia,
And it'll always be the song most melodious.
