- 1. Icons are religious works of art, usually depicting saints, popular in the Russian Orthodox church, among others.
- 2. "The kitchen" in this context usually means "a private place where a person can speak freely of their real political opinion without fear of the wrong people hearing it". It has been used in this meaning since the Soviet times, where that place usually was a literal kitchen.
- 3. A reference to the fact that a lot of Russians want Putin to die.
- 4. The pro-government Russian media have reported that the cause of Navalny's death was "embolism from a blood clot".
- 5. The showing of the Swan Lake ballet on TV has been a symbol of political change in Russia for a while. Most remarkably, it was one of the symbols of the coup in august of 1991, because it was shown on all TV channels for three days straight when the television agencies didn't know what they were supposed to show.
