Translation

The bells of Dawn

The bells of dawn are ringing * ... from my hands
Dante's shabby tom is falling,
A poem started on the lips
vanishes into silence unfinished —
The spirit flies far far away.
The sound is familiar, the sound is alive,
So many times have you been heard
In that places where I grew quietly
Way back in days of old.

* In times of the Russian empire, when the bell rings on the dawn it is said "to strike the dawn" – this was the morning signal for the military gathering.

Dante's shabby tome is falling. Tome as in book.
