A Mother's Wisdom

"In taverns, you'll be the worst man in the world"
said a poor mother to her scoundrel of a son.
even when you're surrounded, you'll find pleasures
in wine and in women and they'll be your undoing.

The friends you make in taverns aren't sincere
and love sold at the entrance of those taverns too,
while you have money you have it all,
after you have nothing left, they'll abandon you.

That scoundrel, that binge drinker,
if he has no money, he has no hope.
instead of being seen with appreciation by others,
they see him with contempt and mistrust him.

"Beloved son, I don't want you to lose yourself,
you still have time to rid yourself of bad habits."
that scoundrel, ill-mannered son told his mother
"I'll stop when the Last Judgement comes"

Many months passed, many years passed,
and that old little woman, cried for her beloved son,
sometimes he's in jail, for fighting in taverns
sometimes he's on the street, drunk.1

Thousands of words of wisdom were all in vain
that his good mother gave him all of his life,
that scoundrel, that binge drinker,
while trying to cure himself of hangover, died in a tavern.

  • 1. He was found on the floor, obviously drunk.
