1. This song was made in the context of the recently published Canon of Dutch history and culture. As the government wanted to reach as many people as possible, it urged experts to make 'audiovisual products' i.e. video's on the topic. This inspired comedian Arjen Lubach to make this song and its video clip.
2. This is a play on words, because the Dutch word for dolmen is 'hunebed' while the Dutch words for 'their beds' are 'hun bedden'.
3. This is from an old Dutch text written around 1075 which in full length was: 'Hebban olla vogala nestas hagunnan hinase hic anda thu, wat unbidan we nu?' which meant 'All birds are making their nests, except for you and I. What are we waiting for?'
4. 'Fittie' is slang for conflict
5. Diggen is an anglicism that is used as slang. It comes from the verb 'to dig'.

7. Saint Nicolas (Sinterklaas) is one of the origins of Santa Claus and in, Dutch folklore, brings presents to children on the 5th of December (6th in Belgium). His helpers, Black Petes, have a black skin colour and used to wear clothing and attributes that reminded many people of slavery. This has lead to a lengthy, and sometimes heated, debate in the Netherlands to change the appearance of Sinterklaas' helpers. The appearance of Black Pete is slowly changing to make it acceptable to all ethnicities living in the Netherlands.
8. De Zwart is a Dutch last name which literally means 'the Black', but Eric de Zwart is DJ with a white skincolour.
9. Jip en Janneke are cartoon characters from children's books by Annie M.G. Schmidt. They are coloured black, but they are fictional and have no particular ethnic background. Thus, this example is not a relevant one.
10. This is the name of the TV programme where the music video first aired.
