Μιά φυλακή ο κόσμος γύρω
τη σιδερόπορτα ν' ανοίξεις μιά στιγμή
και θα σε χρίσουν οι στεναγμοί
λάδι και μύρο.
Η μοναξιά βαριά μολύβι
φέρε στο τάσι τ' ασημένιο το νερό
ξόρκι να κάμω γιά τον καιρό
να μη σε θλίβει.
Ξένος κι εσύ όπως κι οι άλλοι
κι όμως πατρίδα σου των ξένων οι καρδιές
λες μεγαλώσανε οι βραδιές
χειμώνας πάλι.
Φύλα ωχρά, χωριά θλιμμένα
δρόμοι βρεγμένοι, πολιτείες λαμπερές
περνούν μπροστά σου πολλές φορές
χωρίς εσένα.
Η χαραυγή πέφτει σα δάκρυ
και σαν κορίτσι πού 'χει ξέπλεκα μαλιά
κι εσύ παλεύεις με τα παλιά
να βρεις μιάν άκρη.
Το πέλαγο τη μάνιτά του
καμιά φορά την παίρνει πίσω κι ηρεμεί
κι εσέ σου μοιάζει τούτη η στιγμή
σαν του θανάτου.
Τρέχεις να μπεις στ' ανθρωπομάνι
να ξεχαστείς μέσα στου κόσμου τη βουή
αφού βαθιά σου και οι θεοί
έχουν πεθάνει.
Δάκρυ θολό σαν πρωτοβρόχι
προχθές σε ρώτησαν στο δρόμο δυό παιδιά
αγάπη αν είχες μες στην καρδιά
και είπες όχι.

wet streets, shiny states
are passing by in front of you many times
