For those who do not know what "doo-wap" is, please see this page.

My favorite part of doo-wop songs is that they are "ornamented with nonsense syllables". . . .for example, wordless onomatopoeia to mimic instruments, the bass singing "bom-bom-bom," a guitar rendered as "shang-a-lang," and brass riffs as "dooooo -wop-wop." (Wiki "Doo-wop", link above.)

What about the song "It Don't Mean a Thing (if it ain't got that swing)"? That's the first song I can think of as good non sense lyrics example

I'm no expert.

The title of the song to which you refer mentions swing, which may indicate that it is swing music, not doo-wop.

If you look at the Wki article about doo-wop, it provides more "rules" for qualification as doo-wop.

Many famous songs have their own Wiki article, which will mention the genre, usually in the quick ref box on the side.

The song to which you refer is listed simply as "jazz", although jazz is a huge umbrella category. Again, I am no expert in any music genre. I believe "swing" is a specific kind of jazz. See song information for "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" here.

Somewhere there must be an accurate, basic org chart of some kind, a drawing that shows the branches of the genre "tree". My lack of knowledge of music limits my understanding when I try reading definitions/guidelines of genres. And of course, there is so much fusion and overlapping. It can be complicated and confusing.

But I don't think "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" is doo-wop, no, although it's a great song. Many modern songs have scat or nonsensical sounds, but doo-wop was from the 50s and I believe 60s. Indigenous chants have non-word sounds, but they are not doo-wap. That is simply one of the characteristics of doo-wap.

I am surprised to see Beach Boys on this list. I can't think of any doo-wap from them off the top of my head.

:)

I included The Beach Boys, since Surfin', Miss America, and Car Crazy Cutie are doo-wop, imo
