During the day the pale sunshine overwhelmed me.
All the stars looked down on me at night,
but they never freed me from my great burden.
No downpour, no tribunal, nothing washed me clean,
I even cut off shooting-star tails,
aware that it would never again fall from heaven.
So I seized my freedom, forcefully cut my strings
that had stretched up to the firmament.
Everything ruined, everything broken.
debris field and mountain of rubble.
Out I came crawling,
went forth and didn't look around me.
Is it true, did it happen?
Did I dream, that I could go?
Have I broken the circle?
My core remains silent.
Tired and bruised.
So far my feet can carry me
and then even farther.
That's how I escaped,
bringing absolutely nothing with me.
Silence is my only companion,
except the echo within me:
Rest gently,
and rest quiet!
Rest gently!
Dark and cool!
Rest gently,
otherwise you'll burn!
Rest gently!
It's time for you to allow yourself some rest.
Street-dust in every pore,
I hadn't allowed myself
to pause and stop,
so I stared at old dirt.
My body and my mind were sore.
The ground was jagged and rocky,
soon I saw a fissure,
and it finally promised me protection.
Now I finally found rest,
disappearing from this world,
I slept, becoming pale and paler.
Where no stars called to me.
In unrivaled depths
A sea of sweet water
- It carried the echo to me:
Rest gently,
and rest quiet!
Rest gently!
Dark and cool!
Rest gently,
otherwise you'll burn!
Rest gently!
It's time for you to allow yourself some rest.
And above me grew a city that soon became a Juggernaut.
My sleep was long undisturbed,
But one day
I forced my eyes open,
still half in a dream.
Although the bitter, old fears
Awoke along with me,
I left my cave!
Rest uneasily
and don't rest quietly!
Rest uneasily!
Do what you wish!
Rest uneasily,
because you know yourself.
