In Memory Of

In memory of...
In memory of...
In memory of...

In memory of one
In memory of two
In memory of the kiss on your lips
In memory of three
In memory of four
Our days were games instead of work
In memory of five
In memory of six
In memory of the one1 who is not by your side
In memory of seven
In memory of eight
In memory of my country that remembers2

The Sixties Decade (born from 1981-1990)3
Our decade4
It was the decade of war5 and it was the decade of hangs6
Decade of darkness, the faded decade
But still we were happy, the childhood
The first love, the first time
The first separation, the first "heat" (extreme pain, heart break, sorrow)
The first taste of wine
We were in the stairs7, Mamali8 was with me
The first joint
The first hit
On the curb, imitating the Gaam advertisment
Or in the alleys and on the roof
The nightmare of close neighbors9
I remember I sneaky picked my father's car
I remember I rode it right to a pine
I remember my first arrest in the station
They were bargaining for the price of the blackmail
The first "sort your row command" (in school, not-literal)10
At morning, we'd free in the school11
"Beary [gum]", "Love Is..." (romantic stories), goofing off and
We'd laugh in classes12
The first snow13, we are all amazed
The start of "Farvardin" (March, the new year), everywhere closed
The summer, in the alleys, girls and boys
Again in the fall, we are separated from each other14
We'd mountain climbing in Fridays, me and my father
We'd go shop for household items with mom
Home, fight and beatings with my brother15
But in the alleys16 he was always on my side
I remember The Grandma's Home (also name of a nostalgic show)
They had the Lord, they weren't wolves (they believed and wouldn't rip anybody off)
In memory of sweet (lit. flower) relative girls
Who slept years in the prisons of tyranny

In memory of one
In memory of two
In memory of the kiss on your lips
In memory of three
In memory of four
Our days were games instead of work
In memory of five
In memory of six
In memory of the one
In memory of seven
In memory of eight
In memory of my country that remembers

Friday days, in fact evenings
Kid's show was my plan
Dubbed movies of 100 years ago17
"Must Watches" (a show/compilation of random clips) after the night news
Books and poems, afternoons
I would drown in dreams
"Bamdaade Khomaar" (book), Khayyam and Molana (Rumi)
Jules Verne and Agatha, he had it all
Before the fine (green) flowers that we roll
Sometimes we'd pick Lotus (Yaas/Jasmine) flowers
The sweet after taste of them on our lips
After that we'd put up the goals of the game
I remember the finals of '94
Roberto Baggio lost the penalt' and
'98 Roberto Carlos, I lost the bet
I put on 4 rounds
Ali Daei and Khodad Azizi
We were in the streets, without bats and Basiji18
We were happy that we have won Australia19
After that, everything gradually worsened
When I was on the berries tree
I wouldn't even fathom such a nightmare (today's situation) in my sleep
That the answer to needs of brothers and sisters be
‌Baton, gun-powder and coffins
"Chaharshanbe Soori" (the last Wednesday of the year, ancient Persian ceremony to make fire/heat/fireworks and celebrate together)20
By himself, he is
Filling "Aklil and Soranj" (Red Lead Handmade 'Nade),
Newspaper, nylon and rocks in middle of it
Wire tape, he wraps it well 'round it
They burned, those green memories
Fall and yellow memories
The distance of my tears tightened
With the Bahman (middle of winter, Jan/Feb) (lit. Blizzard) of the bad events

Well, our memories are bitter and sweet
The hands of mine and yours on the next generation (asking) what are they seeing
The hands of mine and yours hanged on the corpse (either he is saying that we are already dead or they killed they new generation for trying to envisioning something) and tired, that it's late
It's our common pain that it's captive in this chest
I just want this for The Eternal Generation from God
Open mind and unity and grudge-less heart
[For] The one who has his beliefs, [for] the one who has no religion
[For] The one who is blinded by the light of love, [for] the one who sees

In memory of one
In memory of two
In memory of the kiss on your lips
In memory of three
In memory of four
Our days were games instead of work
In memory of five
In memory of six
In memory of the one
In memory of seven
In memory of eight
In memory of my country that remembers

In Memory Of...

  • 1. In Persian, a single can represent multiple. For example, in this sentence, in memory of "the ones" is also valid.
  • 2. Erfan always remembered Iran and Iranians remembering him pioneering rap along other voices. Such rappers paid great costs, exiles and prisons just to say the words of us and he says that he knows that his country remembers him as he is a part of our history. He was years away from Iran like most other rappers who are criminals in Iran.
  • 3. In Iranian calendar (Jalali), 1981 to 1990 are 1360 to 1369, hence the name "Sixties", '60 or "The Sixty Decade". In Persian, "boomers", "Gen-Z" and such are way less common. Instead, people differentiate their "generation" based on these decades.
  • 4. Erfan was born in 1983 or 1362.
  • 5. Devastating Iran-Iraq war of 1980 to 1988
  • 6. Mass executions of Iran's 60's
  • 7. Alcohol is illegal in Iran. Most people first time they taste it in such unusual places.
  • 8. Friendly version of "Mohammad" name, implying there were such good friends
  • 9. For he would peek in their houses or simply make noise as most houses in Iran have no good isolation.
  • 10. "Order based on the one in front of you" is the command that they yell at you to put up your arm and take an arm's distance from the person in front of you in the line. In Iran, schools have a military like custom to put everybody in rows/lines, usually based on their classes at the very least once at the start of the school day and mostly many times including after each break and at the end of the school. In this stupid event, they usually just start with Quran, praying long prayers, singing the national anthem (all with students having to say out loud as well), checking student's clothes, hair and style, beating or blaming them in front of all the school or motivating them for having good grades or simply to speak propaganda. The worst part was the fact that you had to do it under 60 degree infamous "Red Winds" or bone-chilling snow while teachers sitting in their special rooms designed for carrying this task.
  • 11. Besides "The Morning Row-making", public schools have no good air conditioning and many disasters happened to students and teachers alike for this.
  • 12. Compared to Developed Countries, Iranian students goof A LOT and do a lot of crazy shit while in break or learning. They mock or make random noises and usually laugh at each other getting punishments by teachers. BOY really good laughs we had.
  • 13. In some regions of Iran like where I was grown, it RARELY snows. I saw my first snow when I was 8 and then next happened somewhere around 14.
  • 14. Either to move to a university far away (boy Iran is big) or simply to go to school where everybody is just male or just female.
  • 15. These personal beat downs, although not exactly civil, is pretty common between Persian boys, either as a game (with an adult watching kids wrestling for fun) or as fights.
  • 16. Beat downs in the streets are very common in Iran.
  • 17. Iranian national channels only show very old dubbed movies if they even do as NOTHING gets approved "for public show". There are just really old western treasures if any. Usually it's stupid Iranian shows which nobody watches.
  • 18. Unless celebrating for national events or whatever, usually Basij forces and such disperse crowds by force if they spot.
  • 19. Back in those days, unlike latter decades, people were hopeful and actually believed that things can get good in the country.
  • 20. In the contemporary era, "jumping over a fire, singing and dancing" in this ceremony was replaced by violent hand-made bombs and firecrackers that kills many and injures countless more each year.
