Sauber

Clean

Everywhere there's someone working
Our little house made nice
Everywhere it's dirty
Yet again it hasn't been cleaned enough

Just see how the cupboards
Are covered in grime where there were colours
A coating of dust and dirt
Is a hiding place for the brain

I'm cleaning up, I'm cleaning up1
Everything shall be clean, really clean
I'm cleaning up, I'm cleaning up
Everything shall be clean, totally clean

I'm cleaning up, I'm cleaning it up
Everything must be clean, totally clean
I'm cleaning it up, I'm cleaning it up
I'm making us a beautiful home!

Just look how well I wipe up
The cupboards, the tables
The windowsills and the glass
Cleaning is incredibly fun

Every day is not a Sunday
There's not wine every day
But every day
I make our little house clean

I'm cleaning up, I'm cleaning it up
Everything must be clean, totally clean
I'm cleaning it up, I'm cleaning it up
Everything shall be clean, totally clean

I'm cleaning it up, I'm cleaning up
I spray everything with the cleaning solution
All stains are gone without a trace
You could lick my floor
I'm cleaning it up, I'm cleaning it up

  • 1. "Sauber" and "rein" both mean clean. "Rein" can also mean "pure" but it doesn't fit this context, IMO. It is a "stronger" version of "sauber", more like clean inside and out instead of a surface clean, e.g.

Cleaning is incredibly fun - yeah, you cleanliness fanatic come over to my house...

Überall wird fein geschafft - Everything will be tidied up
Hmm, no "schaffen" means "working" not "tidying up".

Ich mache sauber, ich mach das rein
"Sauber" and "rein" both mean clean.
Yes, you're right, but there's a thin line. Ariel says in its commercials "nicht nur sauber sondern rein" meaning: not even clean on the surface like "sauber" but clean like "rein". Looks like I'm not good to explain stuff.

"Schaffen" is one of those verbs that I often find it really difficult to translate directly to English. Usually it's in the sense of "provide" or "manage". I assumed here it was in the sense of "making the house fein" i.e. pretty?

Hmm, this is true, I usually contrast them with clean vs pure as I mentioned in the footnotes but it depends on context. We don't really use "pure" like that often. Other than saying "clean" vs "really clean" for "sauber" vs "rein", I'm stuck on options in English at the moment. Any suggestions (from you or others) would be appreciated though! Translations I've seen in general for "sauber und rein" are along the lines of "neat and tidy", while for "nicht sauber sondern rein" we tend to say something like "squeaky clean".

Überall wird fein geschafft
This is really a hard one to translate. Sorry, but no it means not to make the house pretty. It means that it's nice to see everybody at work.

You got it. Now everything's said about clean, sauber & rein.

The idea I get from the sentence "Überall wird fein geschafft" is that everyone is working in and around the house. In swabian german "schaffen" means "to work".
Considering the "sauber" vs "rein" thing, "rein" gives me the idea of desinfected.
Hope the comment to be of some help.

Thank you! so just the regular meaning of everyone doing their work in the house? Or specifically working on the house, i.e. with cleaning tasks etc?
