Iron

Forge iron, be born, iron,
Be born in the hot fire
Forge iron, iron rise from the ground,
Be born in the bosoms of maidens1

Forge iron, killing iron,
You are born from forging
Forge iron, black iron,2
A hot tar branding iron

Forge, forge, forge, forge...
FORGE!

Forge three irons,
Ilmarinen forged you3
Lifted you from the ground,
From the footprints of beasts4

Forge iron, be born, iron,
Change in the hot fire
Swear iron, killing iron,
That you never draw blood5

Forge iron, copper iron,
From blows you'll get your edge
Forge the iron so red,
Iron in the hot furnace

Forge the beautifully bright iron,
You are born from blows too
Forge white iron,
Sharpened killing iron

You are born from blows too,
Forge, forge,
You are born from blows too,
Forge, forge, FORGE!

Forge three irons,
Ilmarinen forged you
Lifted you from the ground,
From the footprints of beasts

Forge iron, be born, iron,
Change in the hot fire
Swear iron, killing iron,
That you never draw blood

  • 1. The Finnish word "luonnotar" doesn't literally mean a maiden but refers to a some kind of mythical creature or spirit. They are depicted as females though. In Kalevala Ukko, known as the supreme god, creates three maidens and iron is literally born from their breasts.
  • 2. Each maiden had different colored iron in their breasts: black, red, and white, referring to the different kinds of irons.
  • 3. Ilmarinen is a godlike blacksmith in Kalevala. He found iron and started to forge it.
  • 4. Iron was in the ground/swamps hiding from fire, but the footprints of wolves and bears revealed it.
  • 5. Ilmarinen asked iron to never make anyone bleed. Iron didn't agree in the end.
