Original lyrics
Addio Sogni Di Gloria
addio castelli in aria.
Addio Sogni Di Gloria
addio castelli in aria
Translation
Goodbye dreams of glory
When we happy boys went to school
with shouldered schoollbags and apples in pockets
we had a vision of a festive future,
so many hopes of glory and fame,
but the passing of time inexorably set out our paths
and with our heads bowed down we sink in our fate,
Goodbye dreams of glory,
goodbye castles in the air.
I stare at my desk with unvoiced resentment,
I seek in vain to drive the boredom away.
Farewell years of youth,
why oh why will you no more return
I am an autumn leaf which in the storm
worries about the days' greyness and fears the winter.
I waited for the honest woman
a partner for all my dreams
but I waited and searched in vain:
love, even you, where are you?
Goodbye dreams of glory,
goodbye castles in the air.
I take up my pen and carry on with the double entry accounting,
I make an ink blot, my fingers are trembling
Better to silence these memories or my old heart
Dreams of glory goodbye

A beautiful tune. The lyrics are a bit pessimistic for me - but perhaps they were realistic, not pesimistic, back in 1942 when they were written.
