On This Grey Afternoon

How I want to cry
On this grey afternoon,
With its pitter-patter
The rain speaks of you.
Regret knowing
that, for my fault, never,
my life, never will I see you.

My eyes, when they close
See you the same as yesterday,
Trembling as you1 implore
Again my love,
And today it's your voice that returns to me
On this grey afternoon:

Come,
- you said to me sadly -
For in this loneliness
my soul can bear no more...
Come,
And take pity on my pain,
For I'm tired of crying,
of suffering and waiting for you
And of always talking alone
with my heart.
Come,
Well, I love you so much,
that if you don't come today
I'll be drowned in tears
No,
No it can't be that it carries on like this,
with this love stuck in me,
Like a curse.

I couldn't understand
your desperation
and glad, I left
on the wings of another love.
How alone and sad I was
When I found myself so far
And I realised my betrayal

My eyes, when they close
See you the same as yesterday,
Trembling as you implore
Again my love,
And today it's your voice that flows in me
On this grey afternoon:

Come,
- you said to me sadly -
For in this loneliness
my soul can bear no more...
Come,
And take pity on my pain,
For I'm tired of crying,
of suffering and waiting for you
And of always talking alone
with my heart.
Come,
Well, I love you so much,
that if you don't come today
I'll be drowned in tears
No,
No it can't be that it carries on like this,
with this love stuck in me,
Like a curse.

Best Nisah,
You have done a very good translation, indeed.
Thank you for choosing the tango I have inserted.
I hope you did not hear it before.

Thanks :)
This is the first time I've heard this tango and I very much enjoyed translating it, it was a nice challenge :)

Hi :)

Thanks for your comment, but I think it is indeed 'You' and not 'I', it makes more sense, at least to me anyway.
I didn't realise this song had been translated before, it's nice to see other interpretations, anyhow, there two translations also seem to have 'You' rather than 'I' so I think I'll keep it as it is.

Well, in fact, those two translations omitted the subject "You"/"I", and for me, It seems to mean "I" rather than "You".
Since the guy is begging to have his love (her) back, and " it's your voice that returns to me". Ask & reponse, give & take, It makes sense, does not it?

yes they omitted the subject but it seems to me that the 'you' is implied. I still feel that it's 'you' because it fits better with the following line and the rest of the verse imo. Anyhow I guess it's open to interpretation.
Thanks for your input

Well, I respect your opinion, but I insist mine...

Both are valid interpretations ;) I'll add a footnote.

Good idea, everyone has his own understanding & interpretation.

This is a 5 stars translation!
