Stand up, Kalinka
- Stand up, Kalinka1, let's dance,
Let the enemies2 die of jealousy,
Let the enemies die of jealousy,
Both mine and yours.
Let the enemies die of jealousy,
Both mine and yours.
- Hey, brave one, young and reckless,
How could I stand up, how could I dance?
How could I stand up, how could I dance
When my mother looks at me from over there?
How could I stand up, how could I dance
When my mother looks at me from over there?
- If she looks at you let her looks at you.
She is a mother to you and a grandmother to me3
Stand up, Kalinka, let's dance,
Let the enemies die of jealousy!
Stand up, Kalinka, let's dance,
Let the enemies die of jealousy!
- Hey, brave one, young and reckless,
How could I stand up, how could I dance?
How could I stand up, how could I dance
When my father looks at me from over there?
How could I stand up, how could I dance
When my father looks at me from over there?
- If he looks at you let him looks at you.
He is a father to you and a grandfather to me
Stand up, Kalinka, let's dance,
Let the enemies die of jealousy!
Stand up, Kalinka, let's dance,
Let the enemies die of jealousy!
- 1. This is a female name deriving from the small tree Kalina. It is somewhat similar to the russian Kalinka as in the famous song 'Kalinka moya'. I explain this because many bulgarians think that this name comes from the word 'ladybug' which in bulgarian is 'kalinka'
- 2. The turks were called 'dushmans'
- 3. Because this is something like a love song it can't be taken literally that they have so big age difference. In the spoken language in some regions of Bulgaria mother-in-low and father-in-low were called grandmother and grandfather from the groom. According to this, here we have a young man trying to convince a young woman to marry him. Usually the young lovers were dancing next to each other on the horo (a traditional ring dance)
