Ο παπαγάλος

Σαν έμαθε τη λέξη καλησπέρα,
ο παπαγάλος είπε ξαφνικά
«είμαι σοφός, γνωρίζω ελληνικά,
τι κάθομαι εδωπέρα!»
 
Την πράσινη ζακέτα του φορεί
και στο συνέδριο των πουλιών πηγαίνει.

για να τους πει μια γνώμη φωτισμένη
 
Παίρνει μια στάση λίγο σοβαρή,
ξεροβήχει, κοιτάζει λίγο πέρα.
Παίρνει μια στάση λίγο σοβαρή
και τους λέει: «καλησπέρα»
 
Ο λόγος του θαυμάστηκε πολύ.
"Τι διαβασμένος", λεν', "ο παπαγάλος!
Θα' ναι σοφός αυτός, πολύ μεγάλος,
αφού μπορεί κι ανθρώπινα μιλεί.
 
Απ' τις Ινδίες φερμένος, ποιός το ξέρει,
πόσα βιβλία μαζί του να 'χει φέρει;
Με τί σοφούς θα μίλησε και πόσα
θα ξέρει στων γραμματικών τη γλώσσα!"
 
"Κυρ-παπαγάλε, θα 'χουμε την τύχη
Ν' ακούσουμε τι λες και παραπέρα;"
Ο παπαγάλος βήχει, ξεροβήχει.
Μα τι να πει, ξανάπε «καλησπέρα».

The parrot

When he learned to say "good evening"
the parrot suddenly said
"I'm wise, I know Greek
what am I doing here!"
 
He wears his green jacket
and heads off to the bird conference

He is standing quite serious
He clears his throat and looks away
He is standing quite serious
And he says, "good evening"
 
His speech was greatly admired
What a well-read parrot, they say
He must be wise and great
Since he can speak like a human
 
He has come from Indies
He must have brought many books with him
He should have conversed with many wise men
And he surely can handle easily the formal language
 
Mister parrot, are we gonna have the pleasure
of hearing you talking further?
The parrot coughs
But he doesn't have anything else to say, so he repeats "good evening"
