Translation

Maid Marusechka

Over the hill, over the hill the peafowls were walking
The peafowls were walking, the feathers were losing
The beautiful lady the feathers has gathered
She's gathered the feathers and wove a wreath
The lords, the kings are asking her:
"Art thou a tsar's daughter? Art thou a princess?"
"Neither am I a princess, nor am I a tsar's daughter,
I'm my father's daughter, I'm like a lord's maiden".

The maid named Marusechka was walking over the hill.
May the night will be generous to you!1
She was walking over the hill, she was planting a garden there.
May the night will be generous to you!
She was planting a garden there, she was watering it with the water
May the night will be generous to you!

May the night will be generous and good!
Yeah, we know that the master of the house is at home
There he's sitting in the end of the table
He wears a fur coat
The hundred coins inside that fur coat,
Let everyone gets one coin.

Shedryk, shedryk, shedryk-song,2
A swallow has flown
The swallow has begun to twitter
To call out the master of house:
"Come out you, master,
Look at you goods
Your sheeps gave birth to lambs
The white calves were born"

  • 1. Paraphase, with the literal meaning of the phrase. It's a part of the popular Ukrainian carol song, known in English-speaking area as "Carol Of Bells"
  • 2. Very hard to translate this word. But the root is from "shedro" = "generously"
