El jefe

The Boss

Shakira, Shakira,
Fuerza Regida

7:30 the alarm rings,
I want to stay in bed
but I can't.
I take the kids at nine,
the same coffee, the same kitchen,
the same old thing, same routine,
another shitty day,
another day in the office.

I have a shitty boss that doesn't pay me well,
I walk to work and him in his Mercedes-Benz,
he has me on call1,
that fucking son of a bitch, yeah.

You dream of getting out of the neighborhood,
you have every chance to become a millionaire,
expensive tastes, the mentality,
all you need is the salary.

The bills are adding up, being poor is garbage,
mom always told me that an education sets you apart,2
I studied and nothing came of it, life [was] so damn hard.
I worked harder than anyone, but I fuck less than a priest.
How ironic, what madness, this is truly a torture,
you kill yourself day to day and you don't even have a deed.
They say that no evil lasts more than a hundred years
but then there's my ex father-in-law who still thrives.3

I have a shitty boss that doesn't pay me well,
I walk to work and him in his Mercedes-Benz,
he has me on call (he has you on call)
that fucking son of a bitch (that fucking son of a bitch).

You dream of getting out of the neighborhood,
you have every chance to become a millionaire,
expensive tastes, the mentality,
all you need is the salary.

You have a shitty boss that doesn't pay you well,
You walk to work and him in his Mercedes-Benz,
he has you on call,
that fucking son of a bitch, yeah.

I dream of getting out of the neighborhood,
I have every chance to become a millionaire,
expensive tastes, the mentality,
all you need is the salary.

Lili Melgar4
this song is for you, because you weren't compensated,
another problem as usual, fuck—5

You dream of getting out of the neighborhood,
you have every chance to become a millionaire,
expensive tastes, the mentality,
all you need is the salary.
  • 1. he's a rookie, the recruit
  • 2. I'm trying not to make this too wordy: It means that by studying (getting an education) is your "insurance" for a better life, it sets you up for a better life as opposed to having no education = you're stuck in poverty. But the next line says that that didn't help, life was still hard regardless of their education.
  • 3. lit. "...ex father-in-law has yet to step on foot in the grave" comparing his ex father-in-law to the "evil" in the previous line; which I also chose to translate directly instead of adding an equivalent in English.
  • 4. According to Shakira's followers on social media, former soccer player Gerard Piqué refused to compensate Lili Melgar despite having fired her. Everything seems to indicate that Lili Melgar could be the ex-nanny of Shakira and Piqué's children, who allegedly unmasked Piqué "and opened Shakira's eyes to everything that was going on while she was away". [Source] (Originally in Spanish, translated to English to explain this reference)
  • 5. this part gets cut off: a la verga = fuck off, go to hell, to hell with it, etc.

Cura also means "priest" so in the line:
"Trabajo más que un cabrón, pero follo menos que un cura."
the meaning is more like:
"I work more than anyone, but I fuck less than a priest "

You know what, that completely went over my head. The line definitely means: I fuck less than a priest. Thank you!
