I believe the song might be based on the execution of Miguel Pro (José Ramón Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez, S.J) who was executed on November 23, 1927 during the Cristero War on orders of President Plutarco Elías Calles. Miguel Pro's last words were "Viva Cristo Rey!" as he was shot by a firing squad (then at point blank when that failed). [Reference]
