Prolog./In Gemäldegalerien
In Gemäldegalerien
Siehst du oft das Bild des Manns,
Der zum Kampfe wollte ziehen,
Wohlbewehrt mit Schild und Lanz.
Doch ihn necken Amoretten,
Rauben Lanze ihm und Schwert,
Binden ihn mit Blumenketten,
Wie er auch sich mürrisch wehrt.
So, in holden Hindernissen,
Wind ich mich in Lust und Leid,
Während Andre kämpfen müssen
In dem großen Kampf der Zeit.

Translation
Prologue
In these paintings you’re admiring,
You might see a man appear
When to battle he’s aspiring,
Well equipped with shield and spear.
Teasing putti show their powers --
See them steal his lance and shield,
Binding him with chains of flowers
So he’s nothing left to wield.
I, though, held in comely shackles,
Bind myself, in grief and joy,
Meanwhile others fight the battles,
Striking those we must destroy.
