Original lyrics
Vieraalla maalla
Olen maalla vierahalla
poissa omast’ kodistain,
maa on vieras jalkain alla,
kieli vieras korvissain.
Metsän kuusi ompi vieras,
vieraat järvet, lahdelmat,
ole tää ei kotokangas,
vieraat tääll’ on maisemat.
Vierahaksi itsen’ tunnen,
vaikka olen koissani,
aatteheni käyvät kunne,
käyvät synnyinmaassani:
Vieläköhän vanhempani
elää mua kaivaten,
vai he lienevätkö ani
unhottaneet poikasen.
Yksinäni täällä olen,
ei oo yhtään tuttavaa,
ja jos vaan mä tänne kuolen,
minut peittää vieras maa.
Ulos lähden katsomahan
tämän puolen maisemaa.
Aatteheni synnyinmaahan
kaukaiseen se johdattaa.
Tuo ei ole kotilahti,
en mä tuota tunne, en,
vieras ompi myöskin tahti
sävelissä lintusten.
Kuinka? kuulinhan mä tuolta
sävelen niin herttaisen,
joka ei oo tämän puolta,
se on sävel kotoinen.
Se on Pohjan leivo armas.
»Terve, tuttavani sä!
Ei oo kaihoni niin karvas,
kuin on yksi ystävä.
Älä, leivoseni, pelkää,
älä pelkää ollenkaan.
Oi, jos voisin sulle selkään
istua, me Pohjolaan
kaksin kiitäisimme silloin
kesää sinne ennustaan,
siellä kieles mulle illoin
visertäisi laulujaan.
Mutta yksin nyt sä mennä
vaan voit Suomeen miekkoinen,
sinne kiirehesti lennä
ja vie minun terveisen!»

Translation
In A Strange Land
I am in a strange land
Far from my own home
The land is strange beneath my feet
The language strange in my ears
The forests fir tree is strange
Strange lakes, these bays
This is not the heath of home
Strange here are the landscapes
I feel like a stranger
Even though I am at home
My thoughts go
They go to my homeland
Maybe my parents
Live while missing me
Or have they
Forgotten their son
I am alla lone here
There is no one familiar
And if I die here
A strange land will cover me
I go outside to look
The landscape of this side
My thoughts go to my homeland
Far-off it leads
That is not the bay at home
I do not know it, no
Strange is also the rhythm
In the birds song
How? I think I heard it from there
A melody so sweet
Which is not from here
It is the melody of home
It is the Northern lark's lover:
"Hello, my acquaintance!
My yearning is not so bad
As long as I have one friend.
Do not be afraid, my lark
Do not be afraid at all
Oh if I could on your back
Sit, to the North
We two would then go
To predict the coming of summer
There, in the evening, your language
Could chirp its song
But now you go alone
There the little man of Finland
Go fly there fast
And take my greetings!"
