Letra original
Stride la vampa... Condotta ell'era in ceppi
Stride la vampa!
La folla indomita
Corre a quel fuoco,
Lieta in sembianza;
Urli di gioia
Intorno echeggiano:
Cinta di sgherri
Donna s' avanza!
Sinistra, splende
Sui volti orribili,
La tetra fiamma
Che s'alza al ciel!
Stride la vampa!
Giunge la vittima
Nerovestita,
Discinta e scalza!
Grido feroce
Di morte levassi;
L'eco il ripete
Di balza in balza!
Sinistra, splende
Sui volti orribili,
La tetra fiamma
Che s'alza al ciel!
Condotta ell' era in ceppi
Al suo destin tremendo!
Col figlio sulle braccia,
Io la seguía piangendo.
Infino ad essa un varco tentai,
Ma invano, aprirmi...
Inven tentò la misera
Gremarsi e benedirmi!
Chè, fra bestemmie oscene,
Pungendola coi ferri,
Ei distruggeasi in pianto...
Io mi sentiva il core dilaniato, infranto!
Quand'ecco agli egri spiriti,
Come in sogno, apparve
La vision ferale
Di spaventose larve!
Gli sgherri ed il supplizio...
La madre smorta in volto...
Scalza, discinta...
Il grido, il noto grido ascolto:
"Mi vendica!"
La mano convulsa tendo... Stringo
La vittima...Nel foco la traggo, la sospingo...
Cessa il fatal delirio...
L' orrida scena fugge...
La fiamma sol divampa,
E la sua preda strugge!
Pur volgo intorno il guardo
E innanzi a me vegg'io
Dell'empio Conte il figlio...
Il figlio mio!!!
Il figlio mio bruciato!
Aaaah!!!
Figlio mio! Figlio mio!
Il figlio mio avea bruciato!
Sul capo mio le chiome
Sento rizzarsi ancor!

Răcneşte văpaia!
Răcneşte văpaia!
Mulţimea dezlăntuiţă
Aleargă spre acel foc,
Cu chipuri încântate.
Strigăte de bucurie
În jurul lor răsună.
Înconjurată de brute,
Femeia înaintează!
Răutatea străluceşte
Pe feţele lor oribile.
Flacăra sumbră,
Cum se ridică spre cer!
Răcneşte văpaia!
Soseşte victima,
Îmbrăcată-n negru,
Despletită şi desculţă!
Un ţipăt feroce, de moarte,
Se ridică;
Ecoul îl repetă
Dintr-un deal în altul!
Răutatea străluceşte
Pe feţele lor oribile.
Flacăra sumbră,
Cum se ridică spre cer!

Lyrics by Salvatore Cammarano, based on the original play El trovador (1836) by Spanish dramaturge Antonio García Gutiérrez, which had fascinated both Verdi and his lover Giuseppina Strepponi so very much, that they decided to make an opera out of it.
This enormously successful opera originally premiered at the long-disappeared Teatro Apollo of Rome in 19 January 1853.
In this particularly poignant scene, the weary Gypsy matron Azucena tells her fellow travellers, as well as her son Manrico (the opera's namesake and a high ranking officer in the Prince of Urgell's army during the Catalan Civil War (1462-1472)) how many years ago the Count of Luna's youngest son fell ill. Unable to cure him or explain the illness, the Count and his family looked for a scapegoat and accused Azucena's mother of being a witch, for which she was brutally tortured and eventually, executed by burning.
Before dying, she cried out for Azucena to avenge her death, which the dutiful daughter did by kidnapping the Count's now healthy youngest son. However, the events were so traumatic that, instead of killing the Count's son, Azucena mistakenly threw her own baby in the same pyre where her mother was dying, where he perished horribly. After this revelation, Manrico realizes that he isn't really Azucena's son... And this sets the course of the opera's exceptionally tragic ending.
