I asked the ash tree
Klik om de originele tekst te zien. (Russisch)
I asked the ash tree,
Where the girl I loved was.
The ash tree gave no answer,
Shaking its head.
I asked the poplar,
Where the girl I loved was.
The poplar threw
The autumn leaves on me.
I asked the autumn,
Where the girl I loved was.
The autumn gave an answner,
Which was a heavy rain.
I asked the rain,
Where the girl I loved was.
Its tears flowed for a long time
Behind my window.
I asked the moon,
Where the girl I loved was.
The moon hid behind a cloud,
It gave no answer to me.
I asked the cloud,
Where the girl I loved was.
The cloud melted
In the blue of sky.
My only friend,
Where is the girl I love?
Tell me where she's hidden.
Do you know where she is?
My friend answered faithfully.
My friend answered sincerely.
She was the girl you loved.
She was the girl you loved.
She was the girl you loved.
But she became my wife.

Yes, you are right. Perfect tense is needed here. But to make it sound more smoothly, it's better to use a short form:
"But she's become my wife"
On the one hand you are right, but on the other it is rather song, than a poem :)

Russia is waging a disgraceful war on Ukraine. Sta achter Oekraïne!

Excellent!
Осмелюсь предложить Вам одну правку (на Ваше усмотрение):
Tell, the only friend of mine
Where the girl I love IS?
