Yes, you are right. Perfect tense is needed here. But to make it sound more smoothly, it's better to use a short form:
"But she's become my wife"

Sorry for the typo. Initially it was "has become", later changed into past simple. I just didn't notice I hadn't corrected the word.

In order to preserve the characteristic style of the poem, I would rather advise not to use the sloppy short form.

On the one hand you are right, but on the other it is rather song, than a poem :)
