Taken from a passage in Guarini's "Shepherd Fido" (The Faithful Shepherd), the song's lyrics, according to Greek mythology, address the beautiful Amarilli, a shepherd Alteo who gathers flowers in the mountains and falls in love with her.

However, the handsome but cold-hearted Alteo, who is only interested in flowers, tells him that he can only love the girl who brings him a new flower.
